Title: Weight of Food
Post by: NiteStar on March 22, 2011, 12:47:36 am
So the weight of most foods in-game is the same, or nearly the same: .400 kg, which is a bit less than a pound. To me, this is quite a bit heavy for most foods.

There are some food items, however, that have different weights. Clovers, for example, weigh a mere .010 kg (even that is a bit heavy, as it's nearly 1/3 of an ounce). A tea bag, however, weights .400kb, which is nearly a pound. In real life, a tea bag weighs on the average 2 grams or .002kg.

Now I realize that different foods have different food supplements (food +x). But to bring more realism into the game, it would be nice for foods to weigh approximately what they do in real life.

I would be willing to go through the various types of foods I've found to date and get their average, real-world weights, if they would be implemented in-game. :) I'll list them here in a table or something, and um ... if there are any food types that I've missed someone can let me know what they are and I'll hunt down their average weight.

Sure, go for it. I could provide you with a list of current food objects (some not in-game yet), including their name, how much food they give and their weight. You could change it how you see fit (including how much food they give, if you feel it's not correct) and post back and we'll review it.

Oh, didn't know you had a chart like that. If you could do that I'll research all the real-world weights of food (for an average quantity, on the average).

Hi

I was going to cheekily take your list and create a quick guide page with all the foodstuff on - but a vital piece of information is missing: the amount it adds to your food bar!

Oh well, if the weights are going to change soon there's pro'lly no point anyway - you do realise that means a lot of my food collection will go out-of-date?

By the way, while you are doing this project any chance of taking the opportunity to replace "animal" in the description of most foodstuffs?  I suggest for fruit and veg maybe "fresh"; for pipeweed "dried"; for water "bottled"; for bread and cakes "baked"; for confectionary "tasty" possibly?  If you like I can create a proper list of suggestions for them all (if you promise the description will get changed!).

No it's not. It's the first number after the name of the food, right before its weight.

It won't - all existing food in game would be automagically updated.

Sure, that would be great. :)

Dude, you need to get some better quality teabags. Is there any tea in yours?

Thank you for allowing me to suggest something :) Okay - I've been having a think

The description of a lot of items in Atrinik is usually based on the material they are made of: hence presumably why foodstuffs can be "animal".

If I suggest the description "Fresh" that may be subject to criticism (from I don't know who - do I NiteStar? !) because the food can be lying about in your apartment for ever - then its certainly not fresh!

So taking that argument to a logical conclusion the description should be fairly neutral.

Perhaps some descriptions could include the region they come from - winter vegetables being Lyondalian, for example (Lyon's would be a good shortening).

Where there are different varieties the description could simply be what makes them different, for example "red" grapes or "white" grapes (not green!) when identified.

I plan it to be slightly varied, but I don't think it a good idea to have too many different adjectives.

Comments please anyone?

How about "organic"?

Hmmm

In my humble opinion, after listening to people talking about organic foods elsewhere - I get the distinct impression that organic food is certainly not universally popular.

I wouldn't want to force that on people even though there are very loud voices in minority pressure groups who would try to persuade everyone else to follow their own ethos.

I would require a large number of suppoerters of organic to suggest naming all the food that.

I've never heard of organic food not being popular; the only downside to it is cost (it's usually a bit higher than non-organic foods).

Please listen to other people NiteStar!!!!!!!!!

(I mean what they say, not what you want them to say!)

I'm back!

On the new Food page in my guide I have given what in my opinion is a reasonable descriptive adjective or so for most of the food in that list.  Please feel free to criticise etc.

I had a look at the weights - for most of the food the current weights are believable, but there is an enormous inconsistency in how much it costs to buy equivalent "weights" of food with the same nutritional values.  This is in-line with rl as we will generally pay far more for something we like, but we don't eat a bucketful of an extremely expensive foodstuff such as saffron just because we can afford it!!!!!  I can suggest certain different weights if NiteStar is too busy but it would only be a few of them.
